What Happens If My Payment Fails?
If your credit card is declined when your monthly subscription renews, here's what happens and how to fix it.
The Retry Process
Stripe automatically retries failed payments several times over about a week. During this retry period:
- Your account stays on the paid plan. You keep access to saved connections and 8-hour sessions.
- You'll receive email notifications from Stripe about the failed payment and upcoming retries.
You don't need to do anything if the issue is temporary (e.g., a card that was briefly over its limit). If the retry succeeds, everything continues as normal.
If All Retries Fail
If Stripe can't collect payment after all retry attempts, your subscription is marked as unpaid or canceled. When this happens:
- Your account reverts to the free plan.
- Session timeout drops to 15 minutes (from 8 hours). Sessions stay unlimited.
- Saved connections are hidden, not deleted. They stay encrypted in our database and reappear once your subscription is active again.
How to Fix It
- Go to the Account page.
- Click Manage Subscription to open the Stripe billing portal.
- Update your payment method to a valid card.
- If your subscription was canceled, you may need to click Upgrade on the Account page and go through Stripe checkout again.
Your paid plan activates immediately once payment succeeds.
Avoiding Payment Failures
- Update your card before it expires. If you know a card is expiring, swap it out early. See How to Update Your Payment Method.
- Use a card with a sufficient limit. The charge is $5/month — unlikely to be declined for limit reasons, but prepaid cards with low balances can fail.
- Watch for Stripe emails. Stripe sends a notification when a payment fails, giving you time to update the card before retries run out.
